Doctor Who -

Master Of All Matter

- a TV drama spec script

Outline:

The Doctor returns to Gallifrey during its final moments before being vaporised at the end of the Time War - where he must answer to his apparent crimes against the Time Lords by a reincarnated Rassilon - the legendary founder of the Time Lord society. Unbeknownst to The Doctor, Rassilon is actually his arch enemy, The Master, regenerated in an exact simulacrum of The Doctor’s own body.

Tricking The Doctor into submission, The Master steals the TARDIS, and with it access to the all-powerful Eye of Harmony, giving him control over Space and Time.

Returning to the eve of the Dalek creation on Skaro, The Master intends to steal a genetic code that will enslave every Dalek throughout the aeons.

With the help of a Dalek scientist and a makeshift Tardis, The Doctor faces a race against Time and Space to stop The Master gaining control over the Daleks and becoming the one and only true Master of all Matter ...

Master Of All Matter

SCENE 1 EXT. WASTELAND – DAY – DREAM

THE DOCTOR is MANACLED to a POST in a rocky WASTELAND, as –

An ARMY of small, lifelike DOLLS in various costumes from various eras CONVERGE to attack him, GNASHING their DAGGER–LIKE TEETH …

                                                DOLLS

DOC–TOR! … DOC–TOR! … DOC–TOR!

SCENE 2 – INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – CONTINUOUS

An anxious KELLY SHAKES The Doctor back into reality –

                                                KELLY

Doctor! Doctor!

With a YOWL, The Doctor WAKES from the NIGHTMARE …

He SITS up, looking FAZED …

                                                THE DOCTOR

I was having a scary dream. Dolls. Lots of dolls.

                                                KELLY

What’s so scary about that?

                                                THE DOCTOR

I don’t dream.

He JUMPS to his feet and checks the CONTROL COLUMN ...

She FOLLOWS him …

                                                KELLY

Everyone dreams.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Not me. What time is it?

                                                KELLY

About five minutes before we’re expected on

Eloquis Prime. At the Ambassador’s Ball, remember?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Must have slipped my mind. How do I look?

The Doctor SPREADS his arms. He is wearing a black TUXEDO, matching BOWTIE and white SHIRT …

                                                KELLY

Great. Not too sure about the baseball boots, though.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Dream on! This is the height of fashion on Eloquis Prime!

He NOTICES the time …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Kelly! I’ve been asleep nearly an hour!

Why didn’t you wake me?

                                                KELLY

You didn’t ask me to! Besides, I was busy

getting ready. How do I look?

She stands back and adopts a ‘model’ POSE. She is wearing a short, strawberry–pink DRESS and matching HEELS …

The Doctor is DISTRACTED by a SCREEN …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Umm … yeah … great.

                                                KELLY

Don’t go over the top.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Sorry, Kelly. I’m just distracted. By that dream.

                                                KELLY

So you do dream?

The Doctor is busy checking GAUGES …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Only in an emergency.

                                                KELLY

What is it, then … you do or you don’t?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Don’t.

                                                KELLY

You’re weird.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Weird is better than odd.

His attention is focused on the DASHBOARD ...

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

There must be something wrong –

He THUMPS the Control Console …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Ah–hah! Got it!

An ALARM bell WAILS …

                                                KELLY

What’s that?

The Doctor scans data FLASHING up on a SCREEN …

                                                THE DOCTOR

It’s an alarm.

                                                KELLY

You don’t say.

He STUDIES the Screen …

                                                THE DOCTOR (To HIMSELF:)

That’s why I was dreaming. It’s coming straight

for us. An exponential sheer in the temporal continuum.

                                                KELLY

In English?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Trouble.

He GRABS the Control Column –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Kelly … Brace yourself!

SCENE 3 EXT. TIME VORTEX – CONTINUOUS

A WAVE of NEBULOUS ENERGY swirls up the red TIME VORTEX and COLLIDES head–on with the TARDIS –

The Time Ship RICOCHETS with the IMPACT, banging around the Vortex like a child’s toy being flushed down the drain …

SCENE 4 INT. CONTROL ROOM – CONTINUOUS

The Control Room SHAKES like the insides of a baby’s rattle …

The Doctor and Kelly are THROWN about, as –

The ALARM becomes DEAFENING ...

                                                KELLY

Can’t you switch it off?

                                                THE DOCTOR

No!

The Doctor PRESSES some BUTTONS ...

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

But you can. Over there, Kelly!

The knob with the green handle!

He FLAPS a HAND –

Kelly PULLS the indicated LEVER and the alarm DIES ...

And so too does the TARDIS. The Control Room STOPS SHUDDERING and the main lights BLINK OUT, as –

AUXILIARY LIGHTS dimly ILLUMINATE The Doctor’s WORRIED FACE …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Now, how on Earth did you do that?

                                                KELLY

Don’t look at me. I just flipped the switch –

like you told me.

We HEAR dull, metallic CLANKING coming from OUTSIDE the Control Room ...

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

What’s that?

The Doctor LOOKS AROUND …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Temporal coagulation. Matter convergence.

Kelly RAISES an EYEBROW –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

When the TARDIS loses power it drops out of

the time vortex, back into real space, too fast.

Time is forced to coalesce too quickly. Energy

resolves into matter. The Universe gets all clumpy

as it forms around us. Like cold rice pudding.

Her EYEBROW is still RAISED –

                                                KELLY

Cold rice pudding? Never heard the Universe

called that before.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Let’s just say it’s rather complicated, shall we.

                                                KELLY

I think we better.

SCENE 5 EXT. TIME VORTEX – CONTINUOUS

The TARDIS TUMBLES down a cluttered WHITE TUNNEL, bouncing from one big GLOB of COAGULATING MATTER to another, like a pinball ...

SCENE 6 INT. CONTROL ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Another ALARM SHRILLS ...

Kelly RAISES her HANDS –

                                                KELLY

Wasn’t me. I didn’t touch anything. Promise.

The Doctor THUMPS the CONSOLE. A SCREEN dimly FLICKERS …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh no. Oh no, no, NO!

                                                KELLY

What? What is it?

He STARES at Kelly, the colour DRAINING from his FACE …

                                                THE DOCTOR

It’s coming.

Deftly, he tosses his SONIC SCREWDRIVER her way –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Catch.

Kelly CLUTCHES it to her CHEST, as –

She begins to DISSOLVE ...

                                                KELLY

Doctor?

He REACHES towards her –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Wait!

A HORRIFIED Kelly DISINTEGRATES INTO THIN AIR …

The Doctor looks SHOCKED –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

It was supposed to be me.

CUT TO:

SCENE 7 EXT. GALLIFREY – DEATH ZONE – LATE DUSK

A WASTELAND ... dotted with TOMBSTONES of twisted WRECKAGE, where –

LIGHTNING illuminates the RUINS of a once vast METROPOLIS …

Kelly STUMBLES through the SHATTERED HULKS of dead DALEKS. BONES crunch underfoot. Fear and uncertainty CREASE her FACE, as –

She TRIPS, SNAPS a HEEL … catches herself …

Grouching, she RIPS off her SHOES, then GAPES as GHOSTLY IMAGES FLASH across the DARKLING SKY … revealing monochrome snapshots of the BATTLE between Dalek and Time Lord …

And something else, VISIBLE when the LIGHTNING flashes …

Scurrying out of the SHADOWS … Big CRABS brandishing PINCERS …

Kelly SCREAMS, as –

They SCUTTLE over the wreckage towards her, their MANDIBLES clacking …

She THROWS her shoes at them, then flees, SCRAMBLING over DEBRIS ...

CUT TO:

SCENE 8 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – NOW

The Doctor RUBS his CHIN as he GLOWERS at the Console …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Well this is great, isn’t it. No sonic screwdriver.

No Kelly. A fried helix circuit.

He KICKS the DEAD Console –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

And never a plumber around when you need one.

The Doctor GRABS a STANCHION as the Control Room LURCHES …

The emergency lighting FLICKERS, as –

The familiar INSIDES of the TARDIS become momentarily MALLEABLE, stretching and bending, warping out of shape …

Then reality SNAPS back together, leaving The Doctor looking even more mystified –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Now that’s what I call weird.

A SHOWER of SPARKS spews out of the Control Column –

The Doctor ducks, then LEAPS for the DOOR …

CUT TO:

SCENE 9 EXT. GALLIFREY – DEATH ZONE – LATE DUSK

Kelly is trying desperately to escape the approaching Crabs …

                                                KELLY

Help me! Somebody help me!

She SPRINTS into the broken HULK of a crashed warship …

CUT TO:

SCENE 10 INT. GALLIFREY – THE CITADEL – ANNEX – SAME

The Doctor’s HEAD pokes through the open TARDIS doorway –

He EMERGES, cautious but curious ...

                                                THE DOCTOR

Why here? Why now?

The Annex is a LONG ROOM with an entire wall composed of PICTURE–WINDOWS, now SHATTERED after the TIME WAR …

THROUGH the jagged remains WE SEE a ruined LANDSCAPE wracked by LIGHTNING FLASHES …

The Doctor STARES through one of the FRACTURED windows, to see –

GHOSTLY IMAGES of the CLASH between DALEKS and TIME LORDS, revealed like MOVIE STILLS with every FLASH of LIGHTNING …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Oh no. This is bad. This is very bad. Judging by

the amount of time echoes this is less than an

hour before the Transduction Barrier collapses.

And with it the death of Gallifrey. Why bring me here?

                                                BEHL

Put up your hands, and turn around.

ARMS RAISED, The Doctor SWIVELS around to see a tall, gangly MAN with short dark hair, sharp features and sunken eyes. He STANDS near the TARDIS. His attire is simple, white and sterile. In his HANDS is a bulky STASIS WEAPON, pointing at The Doctor …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Sorry, my fault. Thought all the tour guides had left

for the day. … I was just looking for the loo ...

The Doctor LOWERS his hands a little and STEPS FORWARD –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

You haven’t by any chance –

But he STOPS as Behl RAISES the Weapon …

                                                BEHL

Advance no further … Doctor.

The Doctor RAISES an EYEBROW –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Ah. Bit of a disadvantage here, I see. You know

my name. But I’m afraid I don’t know yours.

Behl looks CONFUSED –

                                                BEHL

What is this?

                                                THE DOCTOR

A grade three stasis weapon. Manufactured by

the Boson Reduction Race, nine hundred and

seventy–six years before the Hernaldigan

Supernova wiped them out. Shame, really;

couldn’t swat a fly with that thing. See the little

red symbol on the top? Means it’s fully discharged.

Behl GLANCES at the Weapon –

The Doctor LOWERS his hands fully …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Now, shall we introduce ourselves properly?

CUT TO:

SCENE 11 EXT. GALLIFREY – DEATH ZONE – LATE DUSK

Kelly is cornered within the WRECKAGE as the nightmare Crabs converge ...

Suddenly, a RAY of ELECTRICITY arcs though the air. The closest Crabs are instantly VAPORISED. Another brilliant BEAM lashes out and another wave of crustaceans are dust. The rest scatter back into the shadows, CHIRRUPING insanely ...

A HAND reaches down for Kelly ...

She GRABS it and is HAULED up onto the outside of the HULL, to see –

THE MASTER … who is IDENTICAL TO THE DOCTOR. He stands before her, wearing long SCARLET ROBES and a slightly bemused FROWN ...

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

Kelly FLINGS her ARMS around him … but he remains IMPASSIVE …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

What happened? How did we get here?

He EASES HER OFF him –

                                                THE MASTER

You are fortunate I heard your screams.

This is not a place for the unprotected.

His VOICE and MANNER are STRANGE … as though he doesn’t know her …

                                                KELLY

Doctor? What’s wrong?

                                                THE MASTER

All manner of vagrant races roam this planet.

Mutated leftovers from the heady days of

gladiatorial combat. Most are brutal. Unforgiving.

He SURVEYS the wreckage …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

You were fortunate I was close by.

                                                KELLY

Doctor, why do you sound … weird?

The Master looks back at Kelly –

                                                THE MASTER

I think you mistake me for another, child.

                                                KELLY

Stop it. You’re scaring me nearly as much as those –

She FLAPS a HAND …

                                                THE MASTER

Skrisks. Salvage seekers. They come to ruined

worlds like Gallifrey to seek out items of

commercial value.

He HOLDS UP his HAND to reveal a GLOWING BLUE RING on his FINGER –

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

But they are no match for the Ring of Rassilon.

Kelly looks DAZED –

                                                KELLY

You mean I was nearly minced alive by treasure hunters?

                                                THE MASTER

They would have ceased their dissection once

they realised their folly. Skrisks seldom kill other

life forms.

                                                KELLY

Well, I’m relieved to hear that! … Wait, did you

say Gallifrey? As in the home of the Time Lords,

Gallifrey?

                                                THE MASTER

The very same.

                                                KELLY

Isn’t it supposed to be vaporised?

                                                THE MASTER

Vaporised?

                                                KELLY

In the Time War!

                                                THE MASTER

Time War?

                                                KELLY

Is it me, or do you keep repeating everything I say?

                                                THE MASTER

Which Time War?

                                                KELLY

Stop it, you’re scaring me. The one with the Daleks.

He STUDIES her for a moment, then –

                                                THE MASTER

Come. We must seek shelter in the Dark Tower

before nightfall.

He starts to CLIMB DOWN from the WRECKAGE …

                                                KELLY

Why?

                                                THE MASTER

Skrisks are predominantly nocturnal. They feed at night.

                                                KELLY

I thought you said they don’t kill people.

                                                THE MASTER

Skrisks are vampires by nature. And your flesh

is very soft and far too tempting. Come along.

Not to be left alone, Kelly swiftly FOLLOWS ...

CUT TO:

SCENE 12 INT. GALLIFREY – THE CITADEL – CORRIDOR – SAME

The Doctor HURRIES along a CORRIDOR with BEHL in tow ...

                                                THE DOCTOR

Let me get this straight. Your name is High

Technician Behl. And we’ve already met?

                                                BEHL

Yesterday.

                                                THE DOCTOR

I was having tea with the Minitron Robusta

yesterday. Over on Primorga Seventeen.

What brings you to Gallifrey?

                                                BEHL

You did, Doctor. Is this some kind of game?

A test? A memory lapse?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh … no games, High Technician Behl. I take

the improper meddling of Time very seriously.

And imposters. When did I supposedly fetch you here?

                                                BEHL

Yesterday. You were most unpleasant.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Doesn’t sound like me. Was I wearing a leather jacket?

They round a corner …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

So what have you been doing for the last twenty–eight

hours, Hi–Tech Behl?

                                                BEHL

Attempting to escape this forsaken world.

                                                THE DOCTOR

That’s impossible, I’m afraid. Without a TARDIS

you can’t get through the Transduction Barrier.

                                                BEHL

I have a TARDIS.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, no you don’t … that’s my TARDIS.

                                                BEHL

I speak of another. Beneath this structure.

The Doctor STOPS in his tracks –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Whoa! Slow down and hit the rewind! …

Did I just hear what I think I heard? Move your

lips again. Like you just did.

                                                BEHL

I am in the process of locating an ignition source.

                                                THE DOCTOR

For what?

                                                BEHL

The TARDIS.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Ah–hah! I knew you’d said it! Not just any Tom,

Dick or Behl can fly a TARDIS, you know!

It takes skill and ingenuity and –

                                                BEHL

A Time Lord.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Exactly!

They CONTINUE along the corridor ...

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

You need a Time Lord to pilot your imaginary

TARDIS. We have built–in Imprimaturs. They’re

like personalised ignition keys, genetically encoded.

Without one, a TARDIS won’t function, can’t function.

Besides, it’s all a bit immaterial, really – since every

TARDIS but mine was destroyed in the Time War.

                                                BEHL

Where are we going?

                                                THE DOCTOR

To the Panopticon!

                                                BEHL

What is at the Panopticon?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Maybe a way to stop the Barrier destroying the

Eye of Harmony. And if not, one seriously

amazing view …

CUT TO:

SCENE 13 EXT. THE DEATH ZONE – LATE DUSK

As the last traces of DAYLIGHT FADE, Kelly and The Master RACE across the WASTELAND towards the DARK TOWER – a forbidding craggy needle rising from the blasted earth …

The CLACKING of alien mandibles can be heard all around them ...

                                                KELLY

So you’re telling me you’re not The Doctor?

                                                THE MASTER

You may call me Rassilon.

                                                KELLY

Have I dropped into an alternate universe or

something? … Because you’re the spitting

image of The Doctor.

                                                THE MASTER

Who told you Gallifrey had been vaporised?

                                                KELLY

You did.

                                                THE MASTER

I did not.

                                                KELLY

Okay. The Doctor did.

                                                THE MASTER

The Doctor?

                                                KELLY

Yes.

                                                THE MASTER

The Doctor.

                                                KELLY

You’re doing that repeating thing again.

                                                THE MASTER

You are acquainted with The Doctor?

                                                KELLY

You’re really not him, are you?

The Master ROLLS his EYES …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Okay. It’s just that … well, it’s hard getting my

head round it, that’s all. You two could be twins.

                                                THE MASTER

All Time Lords share the same genetic material.

It is possible that occasional similarities may occur.

How long have you known The Doctor?

                                                KELLY

Not that long, really. We’re travel companions.

                                                THE MASTER

Where is your TARDIS?

                                                KELLY

Well, I don’t have it on me!

Kelly CATCHES UP –

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Wait … do you know The Doctor?

                                                THE MASTER

I am familiar with all of the Time Lords.

The LANDSCAPE suddenly warps around them, like runny plastic. More monochrome replays of the Time War flitter through the APPROACHING DARK before reality SNAPS back into focus …

                                                KELLY

What are those things?

                                                THE MASTER

Temporal echoes.

                                                KELLY

Temporal echoes?

                                                THE MASTER

Now who repeats whom?

                                                KELLY

Very funny.

                                                THE MASTER

There is a force field surrounding Gallifrey known

as the Transduction Barrier. Its purpose is twofold.

It keeps curious life forms out whilst suspending

the planet in a temporal vacuum.

                                                KELLY

In layman’s terms, please.

                                                THE MASTER

The Barrier is presently imploding. Soon it will

annihilate Gallifrey. What you see are the echoes

of past events, trapped within the collapsing field.

They will multiply as the event reaches its climax.

                                                KELLY

What then?

                                                THE MASTER

Gallifrey will be destroyed. The repercussions will

most certainly cause a time ripple across the cosmos,

unravelling the very linear nature of Time itself.

They reach the sand–covered STONE STEPS leading up into the DARK TOWER –

The Master WAVES his HAND and the big DOOR ROLLS ASIDE …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

After you.

They ENTER the Dark Tower, leaving the sounds of the vampire Crabs behind …

CUT TO:

SCENE 14 INT. THE CITADEL – CORRIDOR – SAME

The Doctor and Behl WALK along a corridor …

                                                THE DOCTOR

It’s been ages … but I’m sure it’s down here some place …

They arrive at a large decorated double–dooR

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Ah–hah! Here we go! Official seat of the Gallifreyan

High Council!

Behl looks UNIMPRESSED –

                                                BEHL

So this is the Panopticon. You brought me here yesterday.

                                                THE DOCTOR

So you keep saying ...

The Doctor leans a shoulder against the Door …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Locked.

Behl goes to a PANEL on the wall and OPENS it. He PRESSES something INSIDE and the Door WHOOSHES OPEN …

                                                BEHL

I was employed by the Kaled Science Division

under the command of –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Davros! The creator of the Daleks!

                                                BEHL

Now do you remember?

                                                THE DOCTOR

No. Never met you before in my life! At least not

in my life. I just recognize the uniform. … Tell me,

High Technician Behl of the Kaled Science Division,

how on Skaro did you get to be here?

                                                BEHL

Your time ship was in need of repair. I had

information you desired.

The Doctor CHEWS his LIP …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Still don’t remember.

                                                BEHL

The helix circuit was misaligned.

                                                THE DOCTOR

So it is! How very odd. Must be something to

do with the temporal anomalies.

                                                BEHL

You brought me here, to this place, to transmit the code.

                                                THE DOCTOR

No, I was definitely somewhere else yesterday.

This is becoming weirder and weirder. Seen any

white rabbits round here? Talking playing cards?

Behl FROWNS ...

They ENTER the PANOPTICON …

SCENE 15 INT. THE CITADEL – PANOPTICON – CONTINUOUS

The PANOPTICON has impressive vaulted ceilings, sweeping stone arches and alcoves housing faded portraits of dead Time Lords …

Between the alcoves are tall windows looking out over the smashed Citadel ...

As promised, the VIEW of the LIGHTNING–RAVAGED landscape is impressive …

Against one wall is a raised structure supporting a trio of grand THRONES –

Although intact, the chamber has a tomb–like feel to it …

                                                THE DOCTOR

This was once the centre of the entire Universe.

Decisions that affected hundreds of civilisations

were hammered out in this very room. Pomp and

ceremony and speeches that went on for days. Ten

million years of absolute power. A true golden age.

Then your beloved Daleks came along and made it

all history. Now look at it. Dead. Just some old

dusty paintings and a few trinkets. It’s all gone.

Like it never even existed – while the rest of the

Universe declines into anarchy and chaos …

                                                BEHL

I have seen the pictures in the sky. My people

and your people are at war.

The Doctor TURNS to find Behl WIELDING the STASIS WEAPON like a club

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, come on, Behl! What good will that do?

You’ve seen the outcome of the War – it’s being

replayed all over the planet! The war’s over!

Your lot won on penalties, remember?

                                                BEHL

I have the honour of my people to uphold.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Your people were exterminated by the Daleks

over a thousand years ago! Along with half the

species in the known Universe!

Behl STRUGGLES with the notion …

                                                BEHL

No, that is incorrect. We built the travel machines –

the Dah–lex as you call them – to help us defeat the Thal.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, they certainly helped you defeat the Thal all right.

Then they exterminated the Kaleds and everyone who

helped create them. They spread through Time and

Space like a machine bacteria, wiping out or assimilating

every sentient race that got in their way.

He MIMICS the DALEK VOICE –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Exterminate! Exterminate! … Before we knew it

they’d found Gallifrey and the rest, as they say, is history.

                                                BEHL

A few of us do believe the direction of Davros'

research has turned obsessive and immoral.

Gharman’s preliminary tests reveal mental

defects within the mutations.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Making them devoid of conscience, morality or pity.

Behl, believe me, I’ve heard it all before. It’s well

documented. It was all too little too late. … You were

one of Ronson’s bunch, weren’t you?

                                                BEHL

Haldin was to petition the Senior Researcher to

inform the government about Davros’ plans. …

Until you killed him.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Me? Never even met the bloke! Besides, it doesn’t

really matter. Ronson is dead. They’re all dead.

The High Council tried to shut Davros down, all right.

He had them all exterminated. You’re the last of

your race, Behl. Stranded here on this barren ball

of useless rock. Just like me. There’s nothing left to

fight over. It’s all gone. All of it.

                                                BEHL

Take me back to Skaro.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Love to. Believe me. But I can’t. There’s nothing

left of Skaro to go back to. It was destroyed in the

thirtieth century by a supernova explosion.

Everyone’s gone, Behl. Everyone.

Behl LOWERS the makeshift club …

                                                BEHL

But I had a family.

                                                THE DOCTOR

You know what? So did I.

CUT TO:

SCENE 16 – INT. DARK TOWER – SHRINE – SAME

The SHRINE is a DOMED CHAMBER with a luminous blue ceiling ...

Magnificent metallic MURALS line the walls – depicting key moments in Gallifreyan history. Several GLASS CABINETS display strange ARTEFACTS –

On a raised DAIS towards the back of the Shrine is a long ALTAR covered in an ELECTRIC–BLUE DRAPE. To one side are two CHAIRS separated by a PEDESTAL – on top of which is a PAIR of identical CROWNS …

Kelly GAZES around her at the elaborate murals –

                                                KELLY

This is beautiful. What is this place? It’s like a

museum or something.

                                                THE MASTER

It is my home.

She EXAMINES the artefacts in their cases …

                                                KELLY

What are these?

                                                THE MASTER

Various inventions of mine.

She looks up –

                                                KELLY

So we’ve established you’re not The Doctor.

Who are you … really?

The Master PICKS UP a large, orange–coloured ceremonial collar and begins to fix it over his shoulders …

                                                THE MASTER

As I say, I am Rassilon, founder of the Time Lords,

creator of time travel.

                                                KELLY

You’re a Time Lord?

                                                THE MASTER

The original Time Lord.

                                                KELLY

But The Doctor said you were all dead. Wiped out

by the Daleks.

                                                THE MASTER

Like Gallifrey?

                                                KELLY

This doesn’t make any sense.

                                                THE MASTER

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that you

may have been misled?

                                                KELLY

The Doctor wouldn’t lie to me.

                                                THE MASTER

The Doctor is a Time Lord. We have our own

agendas. How well do you know The Doctor?

                                                KELLY

Well enough to trust him with my life.

                                                THE MASTER

Did he tell you he is an outcast from his people?

Kelly SQUIRMS –

                                                KELLY

Not exactly, no.

                                                THE MASTER

And that he refuses to obey the Time Lord

code of non–intervention?

                                                KELLY

I’m not going to like where this is heading, am I?

                                                THE MASTER

The Doctor is a law unto himself. He has selfishly

broken Time Lord protocol for generations.

Ostensibly to fulfil his own needs. He is considered

a renegade by the High Council.

                                                KELLY

So I take it he’s in trouble, then?

                                                THE MASTER

The Doctor and trouble go hand in hand.

He knows no respect for authority.

Kelly BITES her LIP …

CUT TO:

SCENE 17 INT. COUNCIL CHAMBER – SAME

The Doctor JUMPS on top of the DAIS and plonks himself in the centre throne

                                                THE DOCTOR

How do I look?

He SEES Behl’s confused expression …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Never mind.

                                                BEHL

It was my understanding that Time Lords lived forever.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Mine too. Looks like we were both wrong.

He PATS the CHAIR ARMS …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Oh, I have so wanted to sit in this chair! Ever since

I was a Time Tot. This was my chair. I used to sneak

in here through the ventilation system. But every

time I was about to sit up here, the Panopticon Guard

would catch me and turf me out on my ear. All seems

a bit silly now. Bit of an anticlimax. Bit of a waste of

time, if you get my drift.

Behl is deep in CONTEMPLATION …

                                                BEHL

Like so many, I subscribed to Davros’ dream,

convinced of its grand design.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Brainwashed. You were all brainwashed.

Davros was spiking your drinks.

The Doctor SCRUTINIZES the chair arms …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

There should be an access control here somewhere.

                                                BEHL

It lies beneath the left arm. Towards the front.

The Doctor FROWNS at Behl as his FINGERS locate the STUD …

                                                THE DOCTOR

So it does.

He PRESSES the stud and we hear a loud grating NOISE of metal against stone, as –

A circular section of floor SLIDES aside and a steely MUSHROOM–SHAPED COLUMN begins to RISE into the room …

The Doctor LEAPS off the throne and runs his hands over the silvery MATRIX INTERFACE, like someone caressing a new car …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Hello, beauty. Remember me?

He places his ear against the smooth metal, LISTENS ...

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

That’s strange.

He stands upright, SCRATCHES his HEAD …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

It’s been locked in hibernation mode. Only a

Human mind under duress can do that.

                                                BEHL

What is this device?

                                                THE DOCTOR

The Matrix Interface.

He SEES Behl’s questioning look –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Access to the repository of all Time Lord knowledge

and wisdom. It’s also the only way to access the Eye

and prevent the Barrier from destroying it. Trouble is,

I can’t access it without the Key.

                                                BEHL

Which is what you said yesterday.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, yes? And where did I say the Key was?

                                                BEHL

In a place called the Dark Tower.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Hmm, this is becoming very spooky, very quickly.

The Doctor BOUNDS over to a WINDOW and WAVES his hand ...

A SECTION of the window PANE SHIMMERS –

In the glass, the SCENE of the outside world ZOOMS in to reveal hundreds of CRABS crawling over the remnants of destroyed battle cruisers, now HALF–BURIED in the sands of the Death Zone …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Skrisks! Yuck! I hate Skrisks! They give me the jitters!

He WAVES again and the view SWEEPS across the barren landscape, coming to a standstill at the DARK TOWER …

He goes over to Behl and TAKES the Stasis Weapon from him –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

I’ll have this, thanks.

                                                BEHL

I thought you said it is useless.

The Doctor twists a part of the barrel and the weapon AUDIBLY powers–up …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Did I? Sure it was me?

He heads towards the DOOR …

                                                BEHL

Where are you going?

                                                THE DOCTOR

To the Dark Tower for the Key, of course. Be back

in two ticks. No tampering while I’m gone, there’s

a good chap!

The Doctor DARTS out of the chamber, leaving Behl behind with a SCOWL …

CUT TO:

SCENE 18 INT. SHRINE – SAME

Kelly INSPECTS the ARTEFACTS …

                                                KELLY

I’ve never met anyone more honest than The

Doctor. … What’s this?

She POINTS at a choker of gleaming stones ...

                                                THE MASTER

The Band of Rassilon.

                                                KELLY

It’s gorgeous. Must be twenty carats.

                                                THE MASTER

Forty. … I presume The Doctor also told you he

was the saviour of the Universe?

Kelly SMILES –

                                                KELLY

Can I try this on?

                                                THE MASTER

It will be my pleasure.

Kelly OPENS up the cabinet while The Master looks on …

CUT TO:

SCENE 19 EXT THE DEATH ZONE – NIGHT

The Doctor THUNDERS through the Dalek graveyard, CRUNCHING bones underfoot as he goes, CHASED by DOZENS of huge CRABS ...

Those Skrisks that block his path are FROZEN IN PLACE by the Stasis Weapon ...

CUT TO:

SCENE 20 INT. SHRINE – SAME

Kelly FASTENS the BAND around her NECK …

                                                KELLY

How do I look?

                                                THE MASTER

Beautiful … for a Human.

                                                KELLY

I bet you say that to all the girls. So what’s your story,

Rassilon? How did you escape the Time War?

THE MASTER

It is of no importance.

He makes ADJUSTMENTS to the ceremonial collar …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Why do you remain with The Doctor?

                                                KELLY

Because it’s fun? I don’t know … because it beats

working nine to five on a checkout somewhere?

                                                THE MASTER

The Doctor is using you.

                                                KELLY

If you’d lived my life you’d see it’s the other

way around.

                                                THE MASTER

The Doctor needs a Human’s gaze to unleash the

might of the Time Vortex.

                                                KELLY

Isn’t that the thing that powers the TARDIS?

                                                THE MASTER

It is the thing that powers Time Travel itself, and

with it control over matter. Only a Human eye can

unlock the Eye of Harmony.

                                                KELLY

Well, as may be, but I’m not with The Doctor

because of that.

                                                THE MASTER

No, I believe you are not. But I believe he is.

The DOOR FLIES OPEN and The Doctor STRIDES in ...

He looks WIND–SWEPT …

A cheesy GRIN twists his FACE …

He is slightly BREATHLESS after his sprint across the Death Zone …

He GASPS –

                                                THE DOCTOR

My oh my. So this is the Tomb of Rassilon!

Well, well, well! Used to be by appointment only

back in the day. Used to queue right around the

Death Zone. Admission price was extortionate.

They say you could die of old age just waiting for

your chance to glimpse the old master of time himself.

Nice to see they got rid of the chintz, though. Never

did like that.

He SMILES at Kelly –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Hello, Kelly! Hope I didn’t miss the guided tour!

Kelly RUSHES to The Doctor, arms outstretched –

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

                                                THE DOCTOR

Steady ... Loaded gun.

He welcomes her EMBRACE …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Did you see that Dalek graveyard?

                                                KELLY

I thought I’d never see you again!

                                                THE DOCTOR

Literally millions of them. All dead. Millions.

Good to see you too, Kelly.

The Doctor RELEASES her, then LOOKS BEYOND HER to The Master …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Now who do we have here? … Oh my! … Me!

It’s me! … This can’t be right!

He puts down the Stasis Weapon, suddenly ANIMATED …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Wow! Just look at me, Kelly! All stuffed up like a

peacock. Ceremonial gear was never my favourite.

Although the collar does lend itself a certain je ne sais pas.

… Wow! I’ve met my other incarnations several times

over, of course … but never the same one! This is brilliant!

Just brilliant! You’ve got to love all this paradoxical stuff.

Manically, he STARES at The Master …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

My oh my … Just look at me … Debonair, suave,

devilishly handsome. … Kelly, is my nose really

that pointy?

                                                KELLY

Doctor, this is Rassilon.

The Doctor’s face BUCKLES –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Rassilon!

He immediately DROPS to one KNEE, head BOWED …

                                                KELLY

What are you doing?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Shush! It’s customary. Get down!

He REACHES out to Kelly, but she AVOIDS his hand …

Instead, she looks to The Master –

                                                KELLY

Tell him to get up. He’s embarrassing me.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Thanks, Kelly.

                                                THE MASTER

Doctor, you need not kneel. Though a noble gesture,

in the absence of a civilisation in which to rule, it

seems somewhat misplaced.

The Doctor gets to his feet …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Well, well, well … Look who’s looking good for

his age! Rassilon, you old devil! You don’t look a

day over three–hundred thousand! … Well, I’ll be

the son of a test tube experiment! … Long time no see!

He NUDGES Kelly –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Rassilon invented Time Travel, you know.

Well, actually he co–invented it with Omega – but

that’s a moot point. Anyway, it’s Rassilon!

He BEAMS at The Master –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

I don’t believe it!

                                                THE MASTER

Like Time, belief is subjective.

                                                THE DOCTOR

All the same …

He is MESMERISED by The Master …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Nice innings, old chap!

The Doctor notices the glass cabinets with their artefacts

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Look at these!

He PORES over them like a child in a sweet shop …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Here’s the Harp of Rassilon ... The Sash … The

Great Key – which was allegedly sucked through

an inter–dimensional wormhole into the Divergents’

Universe along with Rassilon’s good pal Omega …

The Crown ... The Cowboy Boots ... The Black Scrolls

… Oh, and my favourite –

A big SMILE creases his face …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

The De–Mat Gun. What a collection!

                                                KELLY

Doctor, how did we end up here?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Time Scoop plucked you out of our time stream and

dropped you in this one. Fortunately, the TARDIS

had the good sense to follow.

                                                KELLY

Why me?

                                                THE DOCTOR

You weren’t the target, Kelly.

He GLANCES at The Master –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Isn’t that right, Rassilon? You were trying to bring

me here. … Aren’t you supposed to be dead?

                                                THE MASTER

Gallifrey has become a temporal irregularity. I trust

you have seen the time echoes? Past merges with

present. The Eye of Harmony is out of phase.

                                                THE DOCTOR

And you brought me here to help you reset the singularity?

                                                THE MASTER

No, Doctor. The collapse of the Transduction Barrier

and the death of this temporal vacuum are inevitable.

You are not here to save Gallifrey from annihilation.

                                                THE DOCTOR

What, then? Did I forget the anniversary of your

entombment again?

                                                THE MASTER

Doctor, before the High Council was exterminated

by the Daleks they charged you with high treason.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Bah! They’ve been doing that for years!

                                                THE MASTER

They entrusted the punishment to whoever survived

the Time War.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, I get it. You didn’t bring me here to help you

save Gallifrey. … You’ve brought me here to die!

A LONG moment of SILENCE …

Then a GRIN breaks across The Doctor’s face as he WAGS a reproving finger …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

See, I knew there’d be a catch. Never judge a book

by its cover, Kelly. Nor a Time Lord by the colour

of his robes.

                                                KELLY

You can’t be serious.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, I am. Arcalians wear green. Prydonians wear

scarlet and orange.

                                                THE MASTER

Doctor, your peers found you guilty of genocide.

The punishment is death.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Hypocrisy! My intervention in the genesis of the

Daleks was under the direct command of the High

Council!

                                                THE MASTER

And did your assignment meet with success?

The Doctor BITES his LIP, considers ...

                                                THE DOCTOR

Now that you mention it …

                                                THE MASTER

What the good Doctor fails to accept, is that his

meddling in Kaled affairs –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, come on! I was on a mission of plausible deniability!

                                                THE MASTER

 – brought about the eventual destruction of Gallifrey

and the demise of every single Time Lord in existence.

                                                THE MASTER

Ultimately, the Daleks are not responsible for the murder

of our people and half the sentient races in the Universe …

The Doctor is!

Kelly looks AGHAST …

                                                THE DOCTOR

I was set up!

                                                THE MASTER

By whom, Doctor? The High Council? Your failing

was our undoing! Billions of lives were lost to the Dalek

expansion. Even your beloved Earth suffered the same

terrible fate.

                                                KELLY

But The Doctor saw the Earth Death from Platform One …

                                                THE DOCTOR

That’s right! In the year 5.5/Apple/26. So there!

                                                THE MASTER

It was merely the demise of a dead planet. Millions of

years after the Daleks had all but wiped out Humanity.

                                                KELLY

I don’t believe what I’m hearing. … Doctor?

The Doctor SCREWS up his FACE –

                                                THE DOCTOR

The Daleks did get around a bit. Every street corner

at one point. Tenacious little devils. Couldn’t quite keep

them down, no matter what we did.

                                                KELLY

And they came back to Earth, after the Time War?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Time’s a tricky customer, Kelly. Never quite behaving

how you expect. It’s like a big ball of string, all wrapped

up around itself.

                                                KELLY

You told me you saved Earth from the Daleks.

                                                THE DOCTOR

I did save Earth from the Daleks … about six times at

The last count! And will probably do so again! That’s

the nature of Time, Kelly! It’s messy!

                                                KELLY

You also told me Gallifrey had been vaporised.

The Doctor’s jaw TIGHTENS …

                                                THE DOCTOR

I haven’t lied to you, Kelly. Gallifrey does die …

in about thirty minutes from now. And us too if

we don’t find a way out of here.

                                                KELLY

But you said you were the last of the Time Lords …

The Doctor GLARES at Rassilon –

                                                THE DOCTOR

What have you been telling her, Rassilon?

                                                THE MASTER

Only the truth.

The Doctor moves over to the altar ...

                                                THE DOCTOR

You mean your version of the truth. … Okay … I admit

I’ve dabbled in Time and fiddled with the truth! But I’ve

had to make difficult decisions down the ages. And I’ve

had to live with the consequences. The Universe isn’t

perfect. People die. Whole races die. But new ones emerge.

And hope prevails. I can’t save all of the people all of the

time. But I can make a difference. I do make a difference.

Kelly, we make a difference.

The Master PICKS UP the discarded Stasis Weapon …

                                                THE MASTER

Doctor, you have broken the Time Lord code of

non–intervention countless times, culminating in the

genocide of your own race. The penalty is death.

Kelly’s world is ROCKED …

                                                KELLY

You killed all your own people ...?

The Doctor is ANGUISHED –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Kelly!

He MOVES towards her, but she BACKS OFF … towards The Master …

                                                KELLY

Don’t.

The Doctor sees The Master POINTING the Stasis Weapon at him –

                                                THE MASTER

Sit down, Doctor.

The Doctor FUMES …

                                                THE DOCTOR

What?

                                                THE MASTER

Sit down.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Who are you to decide my destiny? Who are you to

judge me? It’s easy to mention my darker moments.

But what about the countless billions of lives I have

saved? What about all the time aberrations I’ve mended?

Without me the entire Universe wouldn’t exist!

                                                THE MASTER

Your ego was always your downfall.

                                                THE DOCTOR

It’s the humanity in me!

                                                THE MASTER

It is the weakness in you.

                                                KELLY

Hey, I’m Human.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Who are you to choose whether I live or I die?

                                                THE MASTER

I am the Master of the Time Lords!

                                                THE DOCTOR

Really?

He GRABS the CORNER of the altar DRAPE …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

So who’s this then?

Dramatically, he SWEEPS back drape, to REVEAL –

A glass casket set on a STONE plinth. Inside, in the customary pose of interment, lies the robed semi–skeletal remains of a man ...

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

The mother–in–law? … No, of course not! It’s the

real Rassilon! Entombed here when you and I were

still Time Tots suspended in the Matrix. Still, doesn’t

look too bad for a chap over half a million years old.

                                                THE MASTER

Blasphemy!

                                                THE DOCTOR

Au contraire. There’s only one blasphemer here.

And Kelly doesn’t even speak French.

                                                KELLY

We did Spanish at school.

The Doctor CLAPS his HANDS, slow, deliberate …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Bravo! Bravo! Very clever! Very clever. For a moment

you even had me fooled. In more decadent times, you’d

get an Oscar for that performance. Well done!

                                                KELLY

Wait, I’m lost here. If that’s Rassilon …

Kelly POINTS at the casket, then at The Master …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Who’s this?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Kelly, let me introduce you to The Master. Supreme

wrongdoer of all wrongdoings. Manipulator of the mind.

More slithery than a Slitheen and deadlier than a Dalek.

He’s an outcast from the Time Lord continuum, partly for

grave and cowardly crimes against life kind, but mostly

because of his questionable dress sense. You could say

he’s my arch enemy. My alter ego. Sparring partner across

the aeons. Just like old Rassilon here, The Master is supposed

to be dead. Reduced to atomic sludge by the singularity

that surrounds the Eye of Harmony. But obviously not.

                                                THE MASTER

Obviously not.

                                                THE DOCTOR

The robes gave it away, you know. Wrong colour.

                                                THE MASTER

Old habits die hard.

                                                THE DOCTOR

So what happened? How did you survive the Eye of

Harmony?

                                                THE MASTER

A Human heart in pure of mind.

The Doctor REALISES …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Ah. You escaped when Rose looked into the Time Vortex!

                                                KELLY

Rose?

                                                THE DOCTOR

My previous, um, assistant.

Kelly FIRES off a scalding look …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

I mean travel companion.

                                                THE MASTER

Correct again, Doctor.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Thank you. … It explains why you ended up with a

simulacrum of my body. We were both regenerated in

the same moment. The Matrix initiated the same genetic

sequences. It created us from the same genetic pool.

Suddenly, The Master DROPS the Stasis Weapon and LUNGES for Kelly ...

He DRAGS her to him, and – with her facing The Doctor – presses his ENERGY RING against her TEMPLE …

Kelly STRUGGLES –

                                                KELLY

Doctor! Do something!

The Doctor STEPS FORWARD …

                                                THE MASTER

I will kill her.

The Doctor FREEZES –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oops. Nearly missed that one, Kelly. The old Ring

of Rassilon. Can’t argue with that one. Atomize every

cell in your lovely brain in the blink of an eye.

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

                                                THE MASTER

Where is your TARDIS?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, it’s safe.

The Master PRESSES the Ring into Kelly’s temple. She SQUEALS …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

All right! Don’t hurt her! It’s back at the Citadel. In the

Annex. Is that what this is really all about? My TARDIS?

It’s not about saving Gallifrey or punishing me, is it?

You wanted the TARDIS all along! You’re just after a

way to escape Gallifrey before it implodes! You’re despicable.

                                                THE MASTER

Morality is subjective.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, no. Not in my Universe. I’ve seen the temporal

disturbances. All right, so Gallifrey can’t be saved.

But if the Eye isn’t stabilized soon the resulting time

rift could rip right through the entire continuum, causing

the very chaos you’re supposedly against.

                                                THE MASTER

Sit down, Doctor!

Kelly tries to RESIST ...

                                                THE DOCTOR

The Universe will die.

                                                THE MASTER

And so too will this one, in a heartbeat.

The Doctor weighs up the situation …

                                                THE DOCTOR

The Universe or Kelly. Funny how the most simple

things in life demand the biggest decisions. Promise

me this, if I surrender, will you spare Kelly and save

the Eye? The TARDIS cannot function without either.

                                                THE MASTER

I will make no promises, Doctor. You are not in a

position to bargain.

                                                THE DOCTOR

To access the Eye you’ll need Kelly alive!

                                                THE MASTER

Sit down!

The Doctor OBEYS …

                                                KELLY

Doctor, no!

                                                THE DOCTOR

It’s all right, Kelly. Trust me. He just wants the TARDIS.

He needs you alive. I, on the other hand, am expendable.

The Doctor SITS in one of the CHAIRS …

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

                                                THE MASTER

Now place the halo on your head.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Coronet, actually.

The Doctor PLACES one of the CROWNS on his head –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Always the bridesmaid. How do I look?

                                                KELLY

Don’t do it, Doctor! Please!

                                                THE DOCTOR

It’s okay, Kelly. Everything has it’s time. And

everything must die. Mine’s just come around a bit

quicker than planned, that’s all. It’s been nice knowing

you, Kelly. You helped bring out the Human in me.

The Master REACHES for the pedestal and PRESSES a BUTTON on its surface –

The Doctor STIFFENS, unable to move or even blink …

The Master THROWS Kelly aside and quickly SITS in the other chair –

                                                KELLY

Wait! You can’t kill him! It’s … inhuman!

The Master SNIGGERS –

                                                THE MASTER

Precious humanity. For the life of me I could never

understand why The Doctor was so infatuated with

your pathetic little species.

He FIXES the other CROWN on his own head, then SMIRKS at The Doctor – who is frozen, watching with wide, UNBLINKING EYES …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

You were always too gallant for your own good, Doctor.

Always willing to self–sacrifice but never actually ever

following through. Now let us see what mettle you’re

really made of. Time to settle a very old score.

Kelly takes a hesitant step forward, but The Master THREATENS her with his Ring –

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Remain where you are, child. Or I will kill you and

your beloved Doctor.

Suddenly, GAUDY ENERGY connects the two crowns, PULSATING ...

                                                KELLY

NO!

Kelly watches, HORRIFIED, as –

The LUMINOUS energy THROBS through a spectrum of COLOURS …

Without thinking, she takes the SONIC SCREWDRIVER out of her dress pocket and AIMS it at the energy streams ...

She SQUEEZES her eyes half shut, as –

A RED beam of LIGHT shoots from the Sonic Screwdriver. It INTERCEPTS the energy streams, causing them to OVERLOAD and CUT OUT …

Kelly re–pockets the Sonic Screwdriver as The Doctor and The Master SLUMP in their chairs, UNCONSCIOUS …

……………….

(IT IS AT THIS POINT THAT THE DOCTOR AND THE MASTER EXCHANGE ESSENCES … SO THAT THE DOCTOR’S CHARACTER IS NOW WITHIN THE MASTER’S BODY, AND THE MASTER’S CHARACTER IS NOW WITHIN THE DOCTOR’S BODY)

……………….

Kelly RUSHES to The Master’s aid …

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

She SHAKES him …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Doctor! Can you hear me?

The Master is LIMP and LIFELESS. Kelly REMOVES the Crown and SHAKES him again …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Doctor!

But The Master remains lifeless. Kelly looks PETRIFIED …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Doctor, you can’t be dead. You can’t leave me here

like this. Doctor! The world’s about to end!

In The Master’s body, The Doctor begins to stir, GROANING …

PANIC RISING, Kelly SHAKES The Master, HARDER –

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Doctor! Wake up! You have to wake up! Doctor!

The Doctor seems to be coming round …

Kelly SLAPS The Master – HARD – across the CHEEK –

Suddenly his EYES SPRING OPEN. He SUCKS in air like a drowning man …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Doctor! … You’re alive!

It takes a moment for him to sharpen up ... His VOICE is a RASP …

                                                THE MASTER

Take me to the TARDIS. Quickly.

Kelly LEVERS him out of the chair ...

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

The Ring. Take the Ring.

Leaving The Master PROPPED UP against the pedestal, Kelly SLIPS the Ring off The Doctor’s finger. The Doctor makes a token GRAB at her, but it is FEEBLE. She gives the Ring to The Master …

                                                KELLY

Anything else?

The Master is WEAK, wobbly, only just able to stand …

                                                THE MASTER

That.

He POINTS to the STASIS WEAPON –

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

And the De–Mat gun.

Kelly PICKS UP the Stasis Weapon and goes over to a GLASS CABINET. She tries to open it, but it resists. She RAISES the Stasis Weapon over her head …

                                                KELLY

Watch yourself.

… and SMASHES the glass cabinet to SMITHEREENS …

She grabs the DE–MAT GUN out of the shards. Then she hooks The Master’s ARM around her SHOULDERS and together they LIMP out of the Shrine ...

CUT TO:

SCENE 21 EXT. DARK TOWER – MOMENTS LATER

The Death Zone is a scary place after dark. Above the HOWL of distant WIND prowling through the wreckage, we HEAR the incessant CLACKING of the Skrisks …

Kelly and The Master stop short on the STEPS of the Dark Tower, as –

DOZENS of Skrisks come POURING out of the SHADOWS towards them …

Kelly hefts the De–Mat gun –

                                                KELLY

You know how to use this thing?

The Master is DROWSY. He manages to LEAN over Kelly. He STABS a STUD on the top of the Gun. His words come out all SLURRED …

                                                THE MASTER

Channel beam. Maximum width. Point and press.

Kelly SQUEEZES the TRIGGER …

The night LIGHTS UP with a SURGE of pearlescent FIRE. A wide, circular beam of RIPPLING energy ERUPTS from the Gun, VAPORIZING every Crab it touches …

The BEAM forms an impenetrable TUNNEL OF LIGHT big enough to walk through. It cuts a swathe right across the Death Zone, scattering Skrisks ...

                                                KELLY

Wow. This would be great at the supermarket checkout.

Kelly hefts the weapon over her shoulder and helps The Master though the glowing tunnel …

As they RACE across the Death Zone, the tunnel FADES behind them … allowing the braver Skrisks to take up the CHASE …

Weakly, The Master uses the Stasis Weapon to discourage their pursuers …

As the light tunnel DISINTEGRATES altogether, Kelly and The Master reach the safety of the Citadel –

The Skrisks are SNAPPING at their HEELS as Kelly HEAVES a heavy DOOR shut, locking the vampire Crabs out behind them …

CUT TO:

SCENE 22 INT. SHRINE – MINUTES LATER

The Doctor DRIFTS out of his STUPOR, as –

He realizes something is wrong …

He FEELS his ARMS and LEGS …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Wait a minute … This isn’t my body.

He EXAMINES his HANDS –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Looks like me. Feels like me. Even sounds like me.

But it isn’t me. I have better dress sense …

REALISATION dawns …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Oh, you sly old fox! Very clever!

He SITS UP and RUBS his aching HEAD –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

You had to steal my body to steal my TARDIS!

The bare–faced cheek of it! I should have known

it would be something as devious as this!

SHAKILY, he gets to his feet and SHRUGS OFF the huge scooped COLLAR …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Panto was never my scene.

He looks down at his ROBES –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Not much I can do about this.

He SURVEYS the Shrine …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Kelly!

He notices the REMAINS of the glass display cabinet …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

So … you’ve taken the De–Mat Gun. Nice weapon of

choice. Clever boy. And you’ve abducted Kelly. Not

so clever. You’re going to need more than that to stop

me getting her back. Oh yes. It’s going to take more

than a De–mat Gun to stop me.

CUT TO:

SCENE 23 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – MOMENTS LATER

Kelly and The Master ENTER the Control Room. The Master is still WEAKENED by his ordeal, but manages to STAGGER over to the CONTROL COLUMN …

Kelly SLAMS the DOOR shut ...

                                                KELLY

If I never see another one of those things again it’ll

be too soon!

She DEPOSITS the Gun on the FLOOR and STRAIGHTENS her DRESS …

The Master STABS at several BUTTONS on the  CONSOLE …

                                                THE MASTER

We must go immediately to Skaro.

                                                KELLY

What about the Ambassador’s Ball?

                                                THE MASTER

No time.

The Master THROWS the TARDIS activation SWITCH and the Control Room LURCHES …

Kelly and The Master are THROWN ABOUT …

                                                KELLY

Not again! … What’s happening?

The Master DRAWS himself up against the Control Column, as –

The TARDIS begins to SHAKE VIOLENTLY. The Master reads a MONITOR …

                                                THE MASTER

There is a malfunction in the helix circuit.

                                                KELLY

What does that do?

                                                THE MASTER

It stabilizes the TARDIS. Without it the ship will break apart.

Kelly is being FLUNG about like a doll …

                                                KELLY

Doctor! … Do something!

SCENE 24 EXT. GALLIFREY – SKY – CONTINUOUS

The TARDIS SPINS WILDLY through the Gallifreyan NIGHT SKY …

Across the LIGHTNING–RIDDLED landscape, TIME ECHOES blink in and out of existence, DRAGGING the TARDIS to and fro, like a child’s toy in a whirlpool ...

CUT TO:

SCENE 25 EXT. THE DARK TOWER – SAME

The Doctor nearly TRIPS over his own feet as he comes RUSHING out of the Dark Tower … but comes to a SKIDDING HALT as he sees HUNDREDS of Skrisks heading his way …

He TURNS UP his LIP –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Ah. Crab supper. Not my favourite.

The SKY is ALIVE with LIGHTNING, revealing even more IMAGES of the Time War. Against this BACKDROP, The Doctor spots a tiny TUMBLING DOT …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Kelly? … I don’t believe it! The cheeky Master

stole my TARDIS!

He BOLTS back inside the Dark Tower …

CUT TO:

SCENE 26 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – SAME

Kelly is being RATTLED around the Control Room …

                                                KELLY

I think I’m going to be sick!

The Master TAPS in time coordinates into the Control Column …

SCENE 27 EXT. GALLIFREY – SKY – CONTINUOUS

The TARDIS HURTLES towards a MONOCHROME IMAGE of a DOME surrounded by SWIRLING GASES …

As the TARDIS impinges upon the ghostly image, reality BUCKLES and the TARDIS is SUCKED into the time echo … leaving stormy Gallifrey behind …

CUT TO:

SCENE 28 INT. SKARO – KALED BUNKER – MEETING ROOM – PAST

In a simple, uncluttered Room, SEVERAL SCIENTISTS sit around a black OVAL TABLE, discussing important matters …

HALDIN

I have grave reservations concerning Davros’ ultimate

intentions.

MELROKE

I concur.

STALSIG

Has Davros alluded to these suspicions?

HALDIN

Davros has his own agenda to fulfil. He believes he

has envisaged the ultimate evolution of the race.

Mutations within his travel machines. He is a mad man.

GREEV

The government must be informed.

STALSIG

These travel machines of his … I have heard he plans

to install them with deadly weapons.

MELROKE

To overthrow the Thal.

HALDIN

Rumour abounds that it is our own government he

intends to overthrow.

STALSIG

Talk like this can get us all executed.

GREEV

If Davros is permitted to continue –

BEHL

I have devised a failsafe.

HALDIN

A failsafe, Tarvol?

BEHL

Something I have been working on. A contingency plan.

HALDIN

You put yourself in grave danger, my friend. We

put all ourselves in danger, and our families. Davros

has spies everywhere. He regards all who question

his methods as traitors to the cause.

MELROKE

His cause is misguided.

GREEV

He must answer to the government.

STALSIG

Tarvol, explain this contingency plan of yours.

BEHL

I have devised a failsafe gene within the mutations.

Activated by code. Once the code is switched on, the

mutations will be under our direct control. Like automatons,

slaved to our command.

STALSIG

How is this code introduced?

BEHL

A defined signal of extremely low frequency pulses.

HALDIN

How will you broadcast such a pulse?

BEHL

The power lines that connect the bunker network.

They will act as an antenna.

MELROKE

This could be our ace card. We must play this very

carefully.

STALSIG

What is the signal?

Behl TAPS his temple …

BEHL

For security reasons, only I know it. As Haldin says,

Davros has eyes and ears everywhere.

HALDIN

All may not be lost.

Haldin STANDS UP …

HALDIN (CONT’D)

It is my hope that we can all reconvene to discuss

this further. For the moment we have a report to

present to Gharman. … Behl?

Behl GATHERS his NOTES together, gets to his feet and LEAVES with Haldin …

CUT TO:

SCENE 29 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – NOW

In SLOW MOTION, the INSIDES of the TARDIS deform and WARP out of shape –

Kelly’s VOICE is SLOWED–DOWN to a long drawl …

                                                KELLY

Doc…tor … wha…t’s … hap…pen…ing?

                                                THE MASTER

Ti…me … dia…lation.

The Control Room BENDS and DISTORTS like hot toffee. Kelly GRABS a STANCHION as The Master PUNCHES instructions into the KEYBOARD …

Suddenly the SHAKING comes to a JUDDERING halt, and their surroundings SOLIDIFY back into their conventional shapes …

Kelly picks herself up. She is shaken, her HAIR all MUSSED –

                                                KELLY

Did you fix it?

                                                THE MASTER

We bypassed the Barrier through one of the

temporal anomalies.

The Master PICKS up the DE–MAT GUN and goes over to the DOOR …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Wait here.

                                                KELLY

Where you going?

                                                THE MASTER

The helix circuit requires specialist attention.

                                                KELLY

I’m coming with you.

The Master RAISES a HAND, stopping Kelly in her tracks …

                                                THE MASTER

I will be one minute. One minute. Please, remain here.

CUT TO:

SCENE 30 INT. SKARO – KALED BUNKER – PASSAGEWAY – SAME

Haldin and Behl MARCH along the passageway. Discreetly FOLLOWING some paces behind is Stalsig, keeping to the SHADOWS …

                                                HALDIN

My dear friend, Behl. I am suspicious of Stalsig.

                                                BEHL

In what way?

HALDIN

I believe he is a Davros sympathizer. If this is

indeed the case, Davros will learn of  our reservations

by nightfall. The repercussions could be extremely grave.

                                                BEHL

We must inform Ronson and the government.

HALDIN

Leave that to me. Perhaps once our meeting with

Gharman is complete you will consider sharing the

finer details of your contingency plan?

                                                BEHL

Absolutely.

Behl and Haldin round a bend in the passageway, to see –

A BLUE POLICE TELEPHONE BOX blocking the corridor, with The Master POINTING the DE–MAT GUN in their direction ...

HALDIN

How can this be? The Thal have infiltrated the bunker!

Both Haldin and Behl TURN to flee, but FREEZE as The Master commands –

                                                THE MASTER

Stop! Or die.

They TURN BACK and RAISE their HANDS …

                                                THE MASTER

Which one of you is Tarvol Behl?

HALDIN

I am Provo Haldin. Chief Administrator. Kaled

Science Division. I am the senior ranking officer

here. You can deal with me.

The Master points the Gun at Behl ...

                                                THE MASTER

High Technician Tarvol Behl?

                                                BEHL

Who are you?

                                                THE MASTER

I am a Time Lord of Gallifrey. I am your master.

You will do as I command. Or you will die the same

death as your comrade here.

HALDIN

You are intervening in Kaled affairs! This is an outrage!

The Master DIRECTS the Gun at Haldin and FIRES. Haldin is VAPORIZED …

The Gun moves back to Behl –

                                                THE MASTER

Bureaucrats.

A wide–eyed Stalsig WATCHES from the shadows as The Master FORCES Behl to enter the TARDIS …

SCENE 31 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Behl ENTERS the Control Room with The Master right behind him …

                                                BEHL

The Skaro Convention clearly states that surrendering

officers must be …

His words TRAIL OFF as he realises the INSIDES of the TARDIS do not match its external dimensions …

                                                BEHL

What is this place?

Kelly holds out a welcoming hand –

                                                KELLY

Hello, I’m Kelly. Kelly Jones.

DISTRACTED, Behl obliges, MESMERIZED by the Control Room …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

This is the TARDIS. It’s a time machine.

                                                BEHL

Overlapped space. Contrived upon itself. Too

advanced for the Thal. If you are not of Skaro …?

                                                KELLY

I’m Human. From planet Earth. And this …

The Master BRUSHES past her …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

This is The Doctor. He’s the pilot. And he’s

obviously in a mood.

                                                THE MASTER

Enough of the banter.

                                                KELLY

Doctor! … Manners. We have a guest.

She looks back at Behl –

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Please forgive him. He’s not feeling himself right now.

Had a little turn earlier on.

The Master POINTS the Gun at Behl …

                                                THE MASTER

You are familiar with helix circuits?

                                                BEHL

Yes.

                                                THE MASTER

Then repair this one and I will spare your life.

Kelly is ASTOUNDED –

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

                                                BEHL

I have no tools.

Kelly HANDS Behl the SONIC SCREWDRIVER –

                                                KELLY

Here. Use this.

Behl gets to work UNDER the Control Column, as –

Kelly makes a face at The Master …

                                                BEHL

The frequencies are misaligned. May I ask what

caused this?

                                                THE MASTER

No.

                                                KELLY

Doctor. Be nice.

The Master GRINDS his TEETH …

                                                KELLY (CONT’D)

Doctor. Are you feeling all right?

                                                THE MASTER

Never better. I feel like a new man.

CUT TO:

SCENE 32 INT. GALLIFREY – THE PANOPTICON – NOW

Behl EXAMINES the MATRIX INTERFACE, as –

The Doctor MATERIALIZES OUT OF THIN AIR …

                                                BEHL

Doctor?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Now that’s got to be the only way to travel!

Behl GAPES, questioningly …

The Doctor LIFTS UP his ROBES enough to REVEAL a PAIR of metal BOOTS …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Personal Telepathic Time Scoops. Pops you in

and out of reality, wherever you want, whenever

you want. Quite brilliant! Rassilon must have had

endless hours of fun with these.

The Doctor’s SMILE suddenly FADES as he his KNEES give …

Behl CATCHES him, steadies him …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Also takes a little getting used to. … Behl,

he’s taken Kelly.

                                                BEHL

Who?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Not who, him! The Master! The chap masquerading

as me!

                                                BEHL

I am confused.

                                                THE DOCTOR

You and me both. What’s more, he’s swiped my

TARDIS! … You said you were in this room with

me, yesterday. Well, that other me happens to be my

arch enemy, The Master. What was I doing?

                                                BEHL

Attempting to broadcast the contingency code.

But you failed.

The Doctor RAISES a querulous EYEBROW …

                                                BEHL (CONT’D)

To genetically enslave the … Dah–leks.

                                                THE DOCTOR

What? Genetically enslave the Daleks? Either my

head’s still groggy or you’re slightly mad! Do that

rewind thing again. With your lips. What code

enslaves Daleks?

                                                BEHL

It is a genetic switch coded into a mutation’s gene

sequence. Once activated by –

                                                THE DOCTOR

An electromagnetic pattern pulse it effectively

lobotomizes a Dalek.

                                                BEHL

A crude description, but yes. Whoever controls

the code, controls the mutations.

                                                THE DOCTOR

And effectively becomes the Master of the Daleks.

The Doctor APPROACHES Behl and gets right up to his face …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Tell me, High Technician Bell of the Kaled Science

Division under the ever–watchful middle eye of Davros,

is this contingency code programmed into every

single mutation?

                                                BEHL

So far.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Then why haven’t I heard about this contingency

code before? With knowledge of this magnitude I

could have stopped the Dalek invasion of space

and time!

                                                BEHL

I intend to share it with the Science Council.

As soon as I return …

                                                THE DOCTOR

You mean when Davros has you all exterminated?

Your code never sees the light of day, Behl. That’s

why I’ve never heard of it! They kill you and your

invention and the Daleks go on to become the blight

of the Universe.

The Doctor WANDERS over to a WINDOW and GAZES out …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Besides, it’s no good anyway … The Transduction

Barrier is about to implode and kill us both.

                                                BEHL

What about the Key?

                                                THE DOCTOR

He’s taken that too.

The Doctor TURNS BACK to Behl, deep WORRY chiselling his face –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Which means we can’t access the Matrix and

reboot the Eye.

                                                BEHL

There must be something we can do.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Afraid not. The Eye will fracture under the collapse

of the Transduction Barrier. The resulting implosion

will cause a time cascade right across the continuum.

Entire time lines will merge and overlap. History will

run amuck. The end of the Universe as we know it.

                                                BEHL

How long?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, I’d say about ten minutes, give or take.

CUT TO:

SCENE 33 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – PAST

The Master PACES, clearly impatient. Kelly stays out of his way, as –

Behl SURFACES from UNDERNEATH the Control Column …

                                                BEHL

I have done as well as I can.

Behl moves aside as The Master comes over to the Control Column and PEERS at a SCREEN. An evil SMILE slants his FACE …

                                                THE MASTER

Very good. Now there is nothing to stop me

controlling all of Space and Time.

He THROWS some SWITCHES …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

We must go back to Gallifrey.

He YANKS the activation LEVER and WE HEAR the TARDIS dematerializing …

                                                BEHL

May I now return?

The Master FACES Behl and LEVELS the GUN ...

                                                THE MASTER

Not yet. There is one last thing I command of you.

Give me the code.

Behl wears a CONFUSED EXPRESSION …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

The code that will make me Master of the Daleks.

… Give it to me!

                                                KELLY

Doctor? What are you talking about?

Behl BACKS AWAY –

                                                BEHL

How have you learned of the code?

                                                THE MASTER

I have visited Skaro many times. Under many guises.

There are no secrets from a Time Lord.

He AIMS the Gun …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

I am warning you, Behl. Give me the code, or die.

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

                                                THE MASTER

The code! Now!

                                                BEHL

I will take it to my grave.

                                                THE MASTER

So be it. The information can be extracted from

your brain even after death.

The Master PREPARES to SHOOT …

                                                KELLY

STOP!

He GLANCES at Kelly –

Who, in TREMBLING HANDS, is pointing the STASIS WEAPON at him …

                                                KELLY

You’re not The Doctor. You’re The Master.

You swapped bodies.

                                                THE MASTER

How very astute of you, my dear. I wondered how

long it would take that pretty brain of yours to work

it out.

                                                KELLY

Please, put down the gun.

                                                THE MASTER

And if I choose otherwise?

                                                KELLY

I’ll shoot.

                                                THE MASTER

What, and irrevocably damage your precious

Doctor’s body?

Kelly STRUGGLES with the notion …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Are you prepared to forever imprison The Doctor

in my old body? With no regenerations left?

Reduced to a single mortality, then nothing.

Kelly LOWERS the Weapon a fraction, and The Master SNAPS his FINGERS –

Instantly, Kelly goes RIGID …

The Master LAUGHS …

                                                THE MASTER

You Humans are pathetically gullible! Although a

fitting accessory to your lovely outfit, the Band of

Rassilon enslaves its wearer to the bearer of the Ring.

CHORTLING, he goes over to Kelly and CARESSES her CHEEK. She is FROZEN, inwardly CRINGING ...

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Pretty Kelly. Delicate Kelly. Forever my slave.

She manages to SPEAK through GRITTED TEETH –

                                                KELLY

You’ll … never … get … away … with … this.

                                                THE MASTER

Oh, but I already have.

                                                KELLY

The … Doctor … will … stop … you.

                                                THE MASTER

Not today. Now go and open the door. We have work to do.

Obedient as a robot, Kelly MARCHES over to the DOOR …

The Master MOTIONS with the Gun at Behl –

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Move.

CUT TO:

SCENE 34 INT. THE PANOPTICON – NOW

The Doctor and Behl stand at a WINDOW, watching HUNDREDS of temporal images FLASH across the NIGHT sky …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Looks like this is it, Behl. The end of the world.

Even the Skrisks are scarpering. It’s the beginning

of the end of everything.

                                                BEHL

What about the TARDIS?

                                                THE DOCTOR

Useless. Without the Eye of Harmony intact, the

TARDIS will undergo complete system failure.

Kelly will be lost forever. Stranded wherever

they are. Some other place, some other time.

                                                BEHL

I mean the other TARDIS.

The Doctor PERKS up –

                                                THE DOCTOR

The other TARDIS? … You mean it’s real?

Behl, I thought you were bluffing! Come here!

He HUGS him …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

You’re a genius!

He RELEASES him –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Take me to your TARDIS!

                                                BEHL

Follow me.

At a PACE, Behl leads The Doctor out of the chamber …

CUT TO:

SCENE 35 INT. THE CITADEL – CORRIDOR – YESTERDAY

The TARDIS has materialized in the Corridor opposite the big DOUBLE–DOOR that leads to the PANOPTICON …

Kelly and Behl EMERGE, followed by The Master, carrying the De–Mat Gun ...

The Master TAKES the STASIS WEAPON out of Kelly’s LIMP HAND and TOSSES it aside. He WAVES the Gun at Behl –

                                                THE MASTER

Open this door. Use that panel.

Behl goes over to the indicated WALL PANEL, opens it, does his magic. Seconds later, the big doors ROLL aside …

The Master SPREADS a HAND to the stricken Kelly –

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

After you, my dear.

SCENE 36 INT. THE PANOPTICON – CONTINUOUS

The Master, Kelly and Behl ENTER the Panopticon …

Immediately, The Master CLIMBS up to the central THRONE, locates the HIDDEN STUD, and PRESSES it –

The MATRIX INTERFACE rises into the chamber …

                                                THE MASTER

Once I have access to the Eye of Harmony, I will

broadcast your code throughout the aeons. Supreme

control over all Daleks throughout Space and Time

will be mine. At last I will be the master of all matter.

The Master comes back down and PLACES a HAND on the Interface. A metallic STALK emerges from the curved APEX ...

A small BULB on the TIP of the stalk GLOWS softly white …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Look into the Eye.

Obediently, Kelly STARES into the LIGHT …

Uneventful moments tick by …

Finally, The Master CHECKS the Interface. His BROW furrows –

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

Something is wrong. The system has locked itself

in hibernation mode. This means I will need the

original Key to gain access. Damn you, Rassilon!

He SLAMS his HAND against the Interface and the STALK retreats …

                                                THE MASTER (CONT’D)

I must return to the Dark Tower!

CUT TO:

SCENE 37 INT. THE CITADEL – GREAT HALL – NOW

The Great Hall is a LOFTY CAVERN of tall STONE PILLARS and deep SHADOWS. It FEELS like an ancient CATHEDRAL …

Behl leads The Doctor over to one of the PILLARS …

                                                BEHL

This one.

The Doctor PLACES a HAND against the stone, BREATHES deeply, SMILES …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Chameleon circuit still functioning perfectly.

How exquisite. They were all supposedly destroyed

in the Time War, you know. How this one escaped

I have no idea. She’s beautiful. Probably been here

centuries. How on Gallifrey did you find it?

Behl takes an OBJECT out of his POCKET …

                                                BEHL

Yesterday, when you marooned me here, I used

this to scan for power signatures. It led me here.

The Doctor GAPES ... Behl is holding the SONIC SCREWDRIVER …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Wait a minute! That’s my sonic screwdriver!

                                                BEHL

I used it to repair the helix circuit –

                                                THE DOCTOR

In my TARDIS!

                                                BEHL

So you do remember?

                                                THE DOCTOR

No! I keep telling you that wasn’t me! It was the other

me. The one masquerading as me. The Master!

                                                BEHL

Will this ever become clearer?

                                                THE DOCTOR

I highly doubt it.

Behl STEPS halfway INTO the Pillar …

                                                BEHL

As you can see, I also used it to circumvent the

cloaking field.

The Doctor PLUCKS the Sonic Screwdriver out of Behl’s HAND …

                                                THE DOCTOR

You’re more than a genius, High Technician Behl

you’re a saviour!

CUT TO:

SCENE 38 INT. THE PANOPTICON – YESTERDAY

As the MATRIX INTERFACE SINKS back into its hidey hole in the floor, The Master POINTS the Gun at Behl …

                                                THE MASTER

You. Out.

Behl BACKS OUT of the Panopticon …

The Master GRABS Kelly by the upper ARM and follows …

SCENE 39 INT. CORRIDOR – CONTINUOUS

As the double–doors ROLL shut behind them, The Master WAVES the Gun at Behl …

                                                THE MASTER

You, stay here. Touch nothing. I will return momentarily.

Silently, Behl watches The Master WALK Kelly into the TARDIS …

As soon as the TARDIS DOOR closes, Behl DASHES over to the discarded STASIS WEAPON and retrieves it, just in time to see –

The TARDIS DEMATERIALIZE …

CUT TO:

SCENE 40 INT. THE OTHER TARDIS – OTHER CONTROL ROOM – NOW

The Doctor and Behl ENTER the Other Control Room. It looks like the insides of a PHARAOH’S TOMB …

Colourful HIEROGLYPHS decorate sandy walls. Ancient EGYPTIAN ARTEFACTS such as URNS, SCROLLS and MINIATURE STATUES of ANIMAL–HEADED HUMANS are scattered around the Room …

In the centre is a GOLDEN PYRAMID representing the TARDIS Control Column …

The Doctor does a PIROUETTE –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oh, now look at this! It’s wonderful! Look at these

glyphs! So eighteenth dynasty! So Tutankhamen!

So anorak!

Behl FOLLOWS The Doctor deeper inside, gazing about him …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

But wonderful as it is, I’m afraid it’ll all have to go.

Done the Mummy thing a while back. Don’t want to

stir up any sleeping Osirians, do we.

The Doctor TAPS the APEX of the Pyramid and a small CONTROL PANEL emerges from the side. He SLOTS the SONIC SCREWDRIVER into a RECEPTACLE and STROKES some KEYS …

Suddenly the INSIDES of the TARDIS MELT away, to REFORM into the familiar décor of The Doctor’s own TARDIS …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

That’s more like it! Now … to find out where that

madman has taken Kelly.

                                                BEHL

What about the Transduction Barrier?

                                                THE DOCTOR

We’ll just have to make sure we get back in time to

save the Eye, won’t we.

The Doctor THROWS the activation LEVER and WE HEAR the TARDIS slipping out of reality, into the Time Vortex …

The Doctor PEERS at a SCREEN …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

If I can just lock on to their location … Ah–Ha!

Found them! … They’re here! On Gallifrey!

Yesterday, by the looks of it. … Hold on!

CUT TO:

SCENE 41 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – YESTERDAY

Kelly stands to ATTENTION while The Master is at the Controls …

Suddenly, a SIREN WAILS …

The Master READS DATA on a SCREEN –

                                                THE MASTER

What? … This cannot be! Another TARDIS! …

But … The Doctor!

Deftly, he PUNCHES commands into the Console …

SCENE 42 EXT. TIME VORTEX – CONTINUOUS

The TARDIS streaks along a NEBULOUS FUNNEL, then VEERS sharply down a FIBROUS OFFSHOOT …

CUT TO:

SCENE 43 INT. THE OTHER TARDIS – OTHER CONTROL ROOM – NOW

The Doctor READS DATA from a SCREEN …

                                                THE DOCTOR

He’s spotted us. He’s taking evasive manoeuvres.

The Doctor STROKES some KEYS on the DASHBOARD …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Two can play at that game.

SCENE 44 EXT. TIME VORTEX – CONTINUOUS

The PILLAR–SHAPED TARDIS swarms along the Time Vortex. It arrives at the OFFSHOOT and VEERS down it  …

The TARDIS appears up ahead … It SLIPS down another OFFSHOOT …

The OTHER TARDIS is in hot pursuit … FOLLOWING it like a shadow …

The CHASE takes them down OFFSHOOT after OFFSHOOT …

SCENE 45 INT. THE OTHER TARDIS – CONTINUOUS

The Doctor PORES over INFORMATION STREAMING across the screen …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Blast! It’s no good. We’ll never catch them! The

TARDIS is just too quick. My fault … had her

modified for a race with a Tarkaylean Pirate and

never thought to change her back.

                                                BEHL

I could try and modify –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Thanks, Behl. But we haven’t the time. Takes days,

even with the right equipment. By which time

Kelly, my TARDIS and my body will be long gone.

He STARES at the screen …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

The gap’s widening every second, exponentially.

In less than two minutes they’ll be out of range

completely. Then they’ll be gone forever.

SCENE 46 EXT. TIME VORTEX – CONTINUOUS

The two TARDIS ships zip to and fro through various VORTEXES …

The TARDIS is MOVING AWAY at an increasing rate …

SCENE INT. THE OTHER TARDIS – CONTINUOUS

The Doctor BASHES a FIST against the Control Column …

                                                BEHL

You have the Personal Time Scoops.

The Doctor’s jaw DROPS … Suddenly, he GRABS Behl by the SHOULDERS …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Behl, Behl, Behl, Behl, BEHL! … What a catch

You are! … I’ll be cutting it fine. Might not even

make it. If I don’t …

                                                BEHL

I will return to Skaro and broadcast the code.

The Doctor SMILES –

                                                THE DOCTOR

I know you will.

He stands clear of the Control Column and GRINS –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Kansas here I come.

He CLAMPS his EYES shut and promptly VANISHES …

CUT TO:

SCENE 48 INT. THE TARDIS – CONTROL ROOM – CONTINUOUS

The Master is BUSY flying the TARDIS, as –

The Doctor MATERIALIZES OUT OF THIN AIR …

He REACHES for Kelly, as –

The Master SWIVELS around and AIMS the De–Mat Gun at him …

                                                THE MASTER

Not so fast, Doctor.

                                                THE DOCTOR

I only want the girl. You can take everything else.

                                                THE MASTER

What is to stop me killing you right now?

                                                THE DOCTOR

The Ventori Swamp Beast that’s just materialized

behind you?

The Master SPINS around, as –

The Doctor WRAPS his ARMS around Kelly and SQUEEZES shut his EYES …

Realising the RUSE, The Master TURNS back, to see –

The Doctor and Kelly DEMATERIALIZING …

                                                THE MASTER

NO!

CUT TO:

SCENE 49 INT. THE OTHER TARDIS – OTHER CONTROL ROOM – CONTINUOUS

The Doctor and Kelly REMATERIALIZE in the Other Control Room, where –

He STANDS Kelly up against a STANCHION and RUBS his CHIN …

Then he CLAPS his HANDS together in front of her FACE, and –

Visibly, Kelly RELAXES …

                                                KELLY

Doctor!

No longer under the SPELL of the BAND, she FLINGS her ARMS around him and  HUGS him hard …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Oxygen … Need … oxygen.

Kelly DISENGAGES …

                                                KELLY

How did you …?

He LIFTS his robe to REVEAL his BOOTS …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Steady! … Admittedly, not the greatest fashion

accessory. But quite a party trick.

                                                KELLY

What about The Master, and the TARDIS?

The Doctor GLANCES at a SCREEN on the Console …

                                                THE DOCTOR

Too late. They’re gone. Vanished into eternity.

He TURNS back and GRINS …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

But, you know what? It doesn’t matter! He can keep it

… for now. I’ll get it back. The Master can’t resist

meddling. Sooner or later our paths will cross …

and then ...

                                                KELLY

But he’s got your body!

                                                THE DOCTOR

And I’ve got his! Makes us kind of even, don’t you think.

                                                KELLY

I don’t understand. Your regenerations …

The Doctor GRINS like a Cheshire Cat …

                                                THE DOCTOR

This body comes with a full set. The Master never

even knew it! Twelve regenerations for the price of

one. Now that’s got to be the deal of the day!

CUT TO:

SCENE 50 INT. GALLIFREY – THE PANOPTICON – EARLIER

The TARDIS MATERIALIZES, and the Doctor, Kelly and Behl EMERGE …

The whole chamber is SHAKING, like in an EARTHQUAKE, as –

BITS of PLASTER RAIN DOWN from the high CEILING …

The Doctor RUNS up to the MATRIX INTERFACE –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Behl, check the sky!

Behl goes over to a WINDOW –

The Gallifreyan NIGHT sky TEEMS with FLASHING TIME ECHOES … Above them, the very FABRIC of SPACE and TIME looks FRACTURED …

                                                BEHL

Less than a minute.

The Doctor MOTIONS Kelly towards the STALK –

                                                THE DOCTOR

Would the Key please look into the Eye. Quickly.

Time is of the essence!

                                                KELLY

Wait, I tried this and it didn’t work.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Well, it wouldn’t, would it? Not while you were

enslaved by The Master. Only the gaze of a

free–thinking Human can access the Eye of Harmony.

Trustingly, Kelly LOOKS into the BULB, as –

GHOSTLY TENDRILS of ENERGY pass between her eyes and it …

The Doctor WHOOPS …

                                                BEHL

Fascinating technology.

LARGER PIECES of CEILING start to TUMBLE to the floor …

                                                THE DOCTOR

The sky, Behl! Keep your eye on the sky!

Behl GLANCES through the window –

The LIGHTNING–FRENZIED sky, filled with time echoes, is almost TOUCHING the GROUND …

The Chamber SHAKES more VIOLENTLY …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Now with a bit of luck and a touch of Gallifreyan

magic, the system should come back online …

and when it does …

The ENERGY CONNECTION VANISHES and Kelly WILTS –

The Doctor STEADIES her …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

The Eye should survive the coming implosion.

LARGE CHUNKS of MASONRY begin to PLUNGE from the CEILING …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

What are we waiting for? I think we have a crushing

engagement elsewhere!

CUT TO:

SCENE 51 EXT. ORBIT – GALLIFREY – MOMENTS LATER

DERELICT HULKS of DALEK WARSHIPS lie in orbit around Gallifrey –

The PLANET itself is WRAPPED in a monochrome coating comprised of MILLIONS of TIME ECHOES …

The OTHER TARDIS zooms away from the doomed world, as –

The invisible Transduction Barrier IMPLODES …

The planet SHRINKS … FASTER … FASTER … collapsing in on itself until all that is left is a tiny bright SWIRLING STAR in the centre … The EYE OF HARMONY …

The rest of Gallifrey has been VAPORIZED …

FADE TO:

SCENE 52 INT. SKARO – KALED BUNKER – STORAGE ROOM – PAST

A tall STORAGE CONTAINER materializes amid other STORAGE BOXES –

A PANEL in its SIDE OPENS, and –

The Doctor, Kelly and Behl EMERGE into the storage room …

                                                KELLY

I still don’t understand why you didn’t just

overpower him.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Time Lords seldom physically grapple. It’s not the

done thing. Besides, there’s more than one way to

skin a Slitheen. Don’t worry, Kelly, our time

will come.

The Doctor PATS Behl on the BACK –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Are you sure about this?

                                                BEHL

My mind is made up. I have a code to broadcast,

and a duty to my people. Thank you for returning me.

                                                THE DOCTOR

My pleasure.

The Doctor EXTENDS a HAND of friendship …

Behl takes up the offer …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Take care, High Technician Behl of the Kaled

Science Division. I wish you luck.

                                                BEHL

Doctor … Kelly ... it has been interesting.

I hope we can meet again in the future.

                                                THE DOCTOR

Or even in the past?

Behl NODS courteously, then LEAVES the room …

The Doctor SIGHS –

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Well, that’s that over. Hopefully, now I won’t be

dreaming any more.

                                                KELLY

You don’t dream, remember?

                                                THE DOCTOR

No, you’re right. I don’t. But now I understand what

it was all about. … In his heyday The Master used

a weapon on his victims called a Tissue Compression

Eliminator. It reduced people to the size of dolls,

killing them in the process. The TARDIS was

telepathically trying to warn me. … Speaking of

which … There’s one last thing I need to do. …

Stay right here … I’ll be back in two ticks.

The Doctor TURNS and DISAPPEARS into the OTHER TARDIS …

                                                KELLY

What are you doing?

                                                THE DOCTOR (O.C.)

Surprise.

Kelly WATCHES as the time machine’s boxy appearance DISSOLVES and REMOULDS itself into the familiar BLUE POLICE TELEPHONE BOX …

The DOOR opens and The Doctor’s SMILING FACE appears …

                                                THE DOCTOR (CONT’D)

Well, don’t just stand there gawking …

we have a Ball to attend!

GRINNING, Kelly RUNS towards the TARDIS …

FADE OUT
